I'm not a cat person but this made me spit out my tea.

Please excuse the terrible photo and instead take a gander at what's in it.  I picked up these two amazing floor lamps, (ok Ceara got the gold one but it's gonna live with me for a while) tons of amazing fabric to make my outdoor cushions (I just realized I haven't mentioned my plans for the top of the garage...that will come next) and my teepee (also forgot to mention I am building myself one of those. I made an Ali sized prototype last weekend) and a blanket and door mat to decorate my teepee.
...who says a floor lamp can't be a bed side table lamp?

The moral of this story is St. Vincent de Paul is amazing and totally rocks my socks, especially because I went in there to get a filing cabinet and came home with all of this stuff plus the filing cabinet all for $41.

Justin sent this to me a while back and I only just now got a chance to watch it. I'm so inspired I better get to work!

I'm a huge fan of Eskayel wallpaper but wouldn't dream of spending that much money on the walls of rental, so I was super excited to get an email today full of their new line of pillows.  They are still on the expensive side but at least you can take them with you.

Yu-uh-um!  I found this amazing Sierra Mar Cookbook from Ivanhoe Books.  I'm so inspired I can't wait to make everything in it.

I actually stopped in to get this Fresh Tomato Leaf candle from Lawson Fenning but couldn't leave without visiting the bookstore in the back.  I know I've said it before but I love these stores.

This Easter Justin and I decided to take it easy and spend the day at home.  That didn't stop me though from making Easter brunch of crab cakes with horse radish creme fraiche over wild rocket salad and spinach and triple cream brie soft scramble.  People keep telling me I need to include recipes with my food posts so I guess I'll give it a try.  Keep in mind that I eyeball my recipes so nothing is exact.

Crab cakes:
16 oz. crab meat
2 eggs
1 cup panko (I prefer these over regular bread crumbs)
4 tbsp. mayo
1 1/2 tbsp. dijon mustard
1 tsp. horseradish
1 tsp. Worcestershire
2 tsp. Yuzu sauce
1/2 onion diced
1/4 red bell pepper
1/4 yellow bell pepper
1/4 orange bell pepper
Roughly chopped herbs (I change it up depending what's in the garden) you can use sage, oregano, thyme, basil, tarragon
Salt and pepper to taste

Horseradish creme fraiche:
2 tbsp. creme fraiche
1 tsp. horseradish
1 tsp. chopped chives

Dice onion and bell peppers. Combine all ingredients in a mixing bowl fold in panko last.  Form desired size crab cakes by hand.  Pan fry in extra virgin olive oil until each side is golden brown.  Serve over wild rocket with fresh lemon, top with horseradish creme fraiche.

There you have it!

New art for the house!  Well I guess technically it's more like new art for Justin but I still think of them as ours.  These pieces were gifts from our good friends Alia Penner (top) and Mekenzie Kay Schneider (bottom) for Justin's birthday last week. These girls are amazing artists and definitely worth checking out.

DIY: Sconce Solutions

From Julie
Two clever solutions to the unattractive-sconce-in-a-rental dilemma: one in New York, one in Los Angeles; both easily replicable with a silver-bowled light bulb, a screwdriver (to remove ugly shades), and a can of spray paint.
Above: Anna of Door Sixteen spray-painted her brass-and-glass sconce fixtures glossy white ("Happily, they came out looking like porcelain") and ordered round Silver-Bowl Decorative Globe Light Bulbs from 1000 Bulbs ($3.47 each).
Above: Faye of You Are the River removed an unappealing shade and installed a silver-bowl lightbulb.

OMG! I sat down at my computer this morning to read my daily blogs, I'm scrolling through Remodelista and I see MY house! Seriously!  I never thought I could be so happy to have an ugly sconce in my apartment.  Thanks Remodelista I'm really honored!

farmers market

March 29, 2010

Back to Saturday's at the Farmers Market.  We always go but recently haven't been taking any pictures.  Anywho we went to Barbrix this weekend for Justin's birthday and got so inspired by the amazing flavors and simplicity of each dish we decided to have our own little "tapas-esque" Sunday dinner with all our fresh ingredients.

On the menu
Baby artichoke w/ garlic dijon aioli dip
Creamy chive mashed potatoes (chives from our garden yay!)
Yellow chard sauteed w/ ginger and shallots
Lemon dill marinated wild shrimp (OMG sooo good)

p.s. don't pay attention to the obvious lack of pretty table settings, we were starved.

I've been dreaming of this necklace for a while now, but every time I go to the Etsy site it's sold out.  Major bummer.  Maybe I'll just have to settle for these pretty cuffs instead...no I want that necklace!

*little update. I finally got it!!!*

I've heard so much about 'Meet Me at the Center of the Earth', an exhibit of New York based artist Nick Cave's Soundsuits "multi-layered, mixed-media sculptures named for the sounds made when the “suits” are worn."  I can't wait to get myself on down to the Fowler Museum to see them in person. ...and I'm in love! With what you ask?  The Rubik Console Table from DWR, of course.  I can see this working in my oddly configured dining room as a sleek bar area.  Think about it, a shiny silver or glossy white tray to hold some fancy boos, flanked by simple matching lamps and just behind the tray add a framed print leaning against the wall.  Yes please!

Clicked myself right on over to Little Brown Pen and now I can't stop daydreaming of Paris...I especially like her color series-es-es.

I'm still searching for the perfect something for my man for his birthday (tomorrow) aah I know!!! I'm such a procrastinator!  I've been shopping all over the place including Mohawk General Store, which is chock full of amazing things but I'm too scared of getting it wrong so I haven't bought anything at all!

Ok well maybe I have some little things up my sleeve but the big gift is still M.I.A.
